Politics and Culture. A Tonic.

Who am I?

I'm general counsel for a medium-sized tax-exempt organization that helps court-involved and other at-risk populations clear barriers to success in the community.

I'm also a development/fundraising professional and provide legal advice and guidance to start-up entertainment firms.

I'm a contributor to Funnybook Babylon and my ever-expanding bookshelf is here. I infrequently write about food and take pictures.

I'm also the happiest newlywed in the world.

That's everything.

Trying to imagine a Godfather starring Laurence Olivier, Dustin Hoffman and John Saxon is proving difficult.

asaucerfulofcobras:

Coppola’s potential cast for The Godfather.

It’s interesting to imagine what Olivier would’ve done as Don Corleone…

-Denis Medri’s rockabilly Batgirl. via Project: Rooftop.

-Denis Medri’s rockabilly inspired Batman. via Project Rooftop.

-Alejandro Bruzzese reimagines the Doom Patrol. His Robotman is fantastic. Robotman’s design is based on

“the ASIMO robot. Sturdy, incredibly strong, capable of taking a cannonball to the “face” without a scratch, and slow as hell. The machine is invincible, but it’s also completely lacking anything like a nervous system. This is the brain of a race car driver, who was obsessed with feeling everything there was to feel, driving a cumbersome tank that can never be destroyed. It’s torture.”

Awesome.

Check out the whole thing at Project: Rooftop.

JLA/Transformers // concept art by Phil Jimenez

From Chris Ryall (IDW) and Phil Jimenez’ pitch for a JLA/Transformers crossover. This would’ve been awesome. I wonder if DC rejected the pitch because of some concern about blurring the brands for their most popular characters post “new 52” relaunch. If so, they should’ve heeded my advice - reject canon, embrace variety.

Brandon Graham does ROM: Spaceknight, circa 07.

Graham’s description of the piece:

I didn’t get to put as much time as I normally would into it on account of all the art I’m trying to catch up on.

The idea was to show who Roms been hanging out with since the 80’s.
The indian girl and dude in the back are related, he’s like her uncle and they use sound as weapons.(flute wind weapons) he’s a badassed space surfer. The tiger carries the soul of a dead man in the helmet around his neck and the little 4 eyed kid is an alien that communes with nature.

This is a scene where someone is meeting with Rom to talk serious buizness. Anything you have to say to Rom you can say in front of his dudes.

I want to read this comic.

-Dr. Doom, reimagined by John Paul Leon. via Project Rooftop. Fantastic work.

-Enrique Breccia. From the unpublished “The Last Wolverine Story”, script by Joe Hill. Check out more unpublished artwork (and the full script for the series) on Joe Hill’s site. This looks pretty intriguing.

Breccia’s redesign of Wolverine is a tad busy, but very cool.

This project was commissioned in 2001 (way before Millar and McNiven’s awful “Old Man Logan” arc), but was scrapped due to editorial upheaval. I’m guessing that this ‘upheaval’ was the beginning of the Jemas era and Grant Morrison/Frank Quitely’s heralded revamp of the X-Men line.

[The New 52] is a tough thing to see. All those comics that you grew up reading, none of them count. It’s not quite an all-service kind of menu of storytelling. Marvel did their Ultimates by saying “Hey, you can either jump on board, or you can read the regular stuff, it’s ok.” There’s no forced “This is it, and this is all it’s ever going to be.”

…..

The worst part of this is that these are all fictional worlds that can be as widely inclusive or as resurrecting of old concepts and character designs as it wants to be. So, why isn’t it malleable to all the readers interests? Why not make all of that available in your library? Doing Kingdom Come, I never expected my designs to become any type of instructions or wave of change within the company.

-Alex Ross, on DC’s “New 52” publishing strategy, from an interview with Bleeding Cool’s Will Romine.

Two obvious points:

I get where he’s coming from with the first point, but on some level it sounds a little silly. All of the stories that he grew up reading still ‘count’ as much as they ever did, which is as much as the reader thinks they count.

His second point is more intriguing. I’ve always thought that the ‘Big Two’ should be more flexible with ‘canon’, and feel free to publish multiple versions/takes on their characters (e.g., Punisher and Punisher MAX or Batman and Batman Adventures). Loosen the reins.

Denis Medri returns to take a look at the rogues of Gotham and more of Batman’s supporting. Catwoman, Joker, Poison Ivy and Bane join Batgirl, James Gordon and Alfred in round out this amazing collection of Rockabilly gothamites. It’s interesting to note that reimagining Catwoman for the 1950s brings her costume full circle, close to her original suit from the 1940s.

I’ve commented/reblogged this almost every day this week. It’s insanely good.

I want this to be real

Denis Medri. I want to read this book.
